Links to other Bat Organisations

Bat Conservation Trust BCT

www.bats.org.uk

The site covers the work of BCT, which is the national organisation devoted to conservation of bats and their habitats and an umbrella organisation for local bat groups. Coverage includes bats and the law, training, survey work and the bat helpline (0845 1300 228).

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust DWT

www.derbyshirewildlifetrust.org.uk

DWT is the county's leading conservation charity and the site gives details of all its activities as well as brief reviews of the 41 nature reserves in its care. Note the organisation has a very broad brief and is concerned with conservation of all native species of fauna and flora. Apart from brief coverage of pipistrelle bat there is little else on bats on this site.

Derbyshire Biodiversity Website

www.derbyshirebiodiversity.org.uk

This site provides information about Derbyshire Biodiversity. Quarterly newsletters are published which can be downloaded from the site as PDF files. Volume 3 Issue 2 has a nice article about DBCG. The newsletter has features about local groups, nature reserves and activities and updates on Biodiversity Action Plans and Greenwatch

North Notts Bat Group

www.nottsbats.org.uk

Small and infrequently updated site, and the events page does not yet give any detail of 2007 events. Currently this is not a particularly useful site. (July 2007)

South Nottinghamshire Bat Group

www.southnottsbatgroup.org.uk

A well laid out site covering most aspects of bat work in Nottinghamshire, but there is no indication of the geographical area covered by the group, and their events are not listed on the web pages, but strangely are on the site for Nottinghamshire Bat Rescue.

There are brief accounts for the 11 species recorded in the county with distribution maps for the whole county.

Nottinghamshire Bat Rescue

www.nottsbatrescue.org.uk

Nottinghamshire Bat Rescue is a group of volunteers linked to both North Notts and South Nottinghamshire bat groups. They provide a rescue service over Nottinghamshire and some surrounding areas including parts of NE Derbyshire. The events for both the Nottinghamshire Bat groups are listed on this site. The site has useful information on care of sick and injured bats.

Cheshire Bat Group

This group does not have its own web site, but information is contained in rECOrd, the biodiversity system for the Cheshire region. (I was unable to log onto the site to do a review)

Sheffield Bat Group and South Yorkshire Bat Group

Neither group has a web site but some information is included on the Sheffield Wildlife Trust and Sorby web sites. There are eight groups in Yorkshire but only the North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Bat groups have web sites.

www.westyorkshirebats.org.uk (Dave interesting, but not too friendly colour scheme. Would be better if background was a midnight blue rather than black)

www.nyorkbats.freeserve.co.uk

Leicester and Rutland

Currently this group does not have a web site.

Staffordshire Bat Group

Currently this group does not have its own website.

West Midlands Bat Groups

www.westmidlands-batgroups.org.uk

This group provides a forumfor common interests of the 10 bat groups in Natural England's West Midlands Region (includes Derbyshire). Site is mainly basic contact information for bat related subjects, with a members only forum.

Natural England EN

www.naturalengland.org.uk

This is the government body responsible for conservation activities throughout England (Wales and Scotland have their own bodies). This site covers general work of EN, and has little on bats except for the species recovery plan for Greater Horseshoe bat. There is a significant section on licensing.

Derbyshire Caving Association

www.caveinfo.org.uk/nca/dca.htm

An information page on the National Caving Association web site with contact names and addresses for the Derbyshire Caving Association.

Peak District Mines Historical Society

www.pdmhs.com

New version of web site. The Society is based at the Peak District Mining Museum, Matlock. This site contains information on both coal and metalliferous mines in Derbyshire.
